Excuse us for not throwing tons of updates on Modojo today. A certain free word game killed productivity on what should be a busy Friday. On that note, and without further ado, we present the apps that shined brightest on iOS and Android.

iOS: Letterpress

Having played Zynga's Words With Friends for months, and not getting kicked off any planes, we thought we'd played our last asynchronous word game, at least until Letterpress came along. Available free of charge with the full version unlocked at $0.99, this delightfully strategic effort pits two players against each other in a battle of words, as one attempts to make more than the other using a five-by-five grid of letters. Although people take their sweet time responding, the ensuing battle, which involves sectioning off certain letters and stealing points from one's opponent, is worth the wait. Simplistic design and friendly controls are among the highlights.

Android: Zombiewood

Lights, camera, bloodshed. That's the basic gist of Gameloft's free-to-play third person shooter, which casts you as a big shot actor out to take advantage of the zombie apocalypse by mowing down waves of undead while a director films the carnage. A variety of body busting weapons and gold coins to collect should keep you slaughtering the undead for hours, while attractive visuals always give you something pretty to look at. An ideal pickup for zombie fanatics, and it doesn't cost a dime unless you give in to making an in-app purchase.
