Barring some announcement, it appears Square Enix is content with letting Heroes of Ruindisappear into 3DS obscurity. Quite frankly, that's a damn shame. It's a game we've kept a close eye on for good reason. Four unique classes, thousands of items to collect and true online multiplayer are three major selling points for this ambitious dungeon crawler, and there's definitely a small group of fans currently enjoying the fruits of developer n-Space's labor.
At the same time, the game's critics are quite vocal about the weaknesses. Namely, bosses that don't show up when they're supposed to, a variety of other glitches, a small level cap and inventory to hold all that loot, along with enemies that fail to put up much of a fight. Now throw a $39.99 price tag onto the box (currently $33.91 at Amazon), and it should go without saying that Heroes is a risky gamble.
Basically, the game needs a patch, and at this point, with two plus months post release, we doubt it'll happen. N-Space hasn't mentioned anything about updating the game, or even the possibility of an update in a long time, and may have closed the door on it altogether. Instead, members of the studio discuss in-game content on its Facebook page, the final post November 8.
With this in mind, we have to wonder how many people care about Heroes of Ruin, given the price and high number of average to awful review scores infesting the Internet. That said, Square Enix should make the sensible decision in bringing this hack-and-slash adventure to iOS and Android. Not only would it costs significantly less (though given Square Enix's mobile history, anywhere between $16.99-$19.99 seems about right), but it would also introduce the game to two different audiences.
Not only that, but it would give n-Space the means with which to update on a regular basis. Tweaked difficulty? Increased level cap? Online fixes? Probably all that and more.
Most importantly, it prevents the game from being forgotten and/or written off, at least for a little while longer. We can't guarantee that Heroes of Ruin would glow on smartphones and tablets, but one thing is certain: the game deserves better.
